60 years of the Second Vatican Council: Believing, thinking and acting interculturally

To mark the 60th anniversary of the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, the Institute of Roman Catholic Theology at Osnabrück University and Haus Ohrbeck are hosting an international conference.

Under the title "Believing, thinking and acting interculturally", the impulses of the Council will be re-examined from a world church and intercultural perspective.

The aim of the conference is to continue thinking about the reform dynamics of the Council 60 years later in an intercultural exchange. "The discussions are intended to provide a platform for exchange between different cultures, pastoral, professional and academic contexts as well as theological approaches," says Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Margit Eckholt from the Institute of Roman Catholic Theology at Osnabrück University. The theologian is organizing the conference together with her research assistant Dr. Severin Parzinger as well as Franziska Birke-Bugiel and Dr. Josef M. Könning from Haus Ohrbeck.

The kick-off event on Friday, November 21, 2025, has the motto "Learning to think globally" and offers six thematic workshops. Among other things, the aim is to discuss the extent to which an examination of the Council documents in school, pastoral and academic practice is still appropriate.

At the public evening forum at 7.30 p.m., renowned Council researchers - including Prof. Dr. Shaji Kochuthara (Rome/Bangalore), Prof. Dr. Béatrice Faye (Dakar), Prof. Dr. Carlos Schickendantz (Santiago de Chile) and Prof. Dr. Christoph Theobald (Paris) - will discuss the future of a synodal church.

On Saturday, November 22, 2025, theologians will discuss the relevance of the Council documents for education, ecumenism and interreligious understanding in panels and workshops.
