What is the Osnabrück University PhD student representation?
The PhD student representation at Osnabrück University is a coalition of the promos council and the PhD Student Representative Committee. While promos is an official body of Osnabrück University, the PhD Student Representative Committee is part of the student self-government.
What are the bodies and tasks of the Osnabrück University PhD student representation?
promos represents for the "official" side and acts as the voice of PhD students to external entities, such as other PhD student representations. The PhD Student Representative Committee is the "social" dimension of PhD student representation at Osnabrück University, and, as an organ of self-government, is responsible for connecting Phd students with one another by organizing various events.
What is the connection to the PhD/Postdoc Career Center?
The PhD/Postdoc Career Center (abbreviated as ZePrOs in German) is an interdisciplinary institution at the university that supports PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from all fields in their academic and cross-disciplinary qualification. The PhD/Postdoc Career Center offers individual counseling, mentoring programs, and qualification courses in the areas such as scientific methods, leadership skills, self-management skills, and career planning for PhD students and postdocs.
One of the links between the PhD/Postdoc Career Center and us, the PhD student representation, is that the promos Council appoints four representatives to the Scientific Advisory Council of the PhD/Postdoc Career Center. There, decisions are made regarding the annual course and event program, as well as discussions on topics related to quality assurance and the further development of doctorates as well as the overall support of early career researchers. promos
What is promos?
promos was established in 2011 as the first association of a few PhD students who aimed to address the lack of representation of PhD students at Osnabrück University. Over time, promos has become an established body of the university and, together with the PhD Student Representative Committee, represents the interests of PhD students at Osnabrück University.
promos is represented by the promos Council, which consists of five members and is elected by PhD students at the annual general assembly. The promos Council is additionally supported by other PhD students in fulfilling various tasks.
What are the tasks of promos?
promos is primarily responsible for the representation and advocacy of PhD students' interests to the university management. In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the five elected members of the promos Council participate in various university committees and network with representatives from other universities.

What is promos currently engaged in?
We are currently represented in the following committees and organizations:
Scientific Advisory Council of the PhD/Postdoc Career Center
promos sends four PhD students to the Scientific Advisory Council to represent the interests of all PhD students, for example in the adoption of the course program.
University-wide working groups
promos has the opportunity to participate in university-wide working groups, which are usually initiated by the President's Cabinet. For instance, 2015 and 2016, we were involved in the working group on qualification and quality objectives for studying and teaching as part of the UOS 2020 strategy program.
School Executive Boards and Senate
promos sends one member in advisory capacity to each of the School Executive Boards and the Senate. In the School Executive Boards, we provide input on on drafts and amendments to the doctoral degree regulations.
University Arbitration Board for Conflict During PhD Studies
promos sends two representatives to this board. Further information on the Arbitration Board and the procedural guidelines for handling conflicts in doctoral affairs can be found in the procedural guidelines.
PhD Student Representative Committee
What is the PhD Student Representative Committee?
The PhD Student Representative Committee represents all PhD students enrolled at Osnabrück University and is part of the university's self-government. It is represented by the Faculty PhD Student Council, which is elected once a year, along with other associated members.
What are the tasks of the Faculty PhD Student Council?
The main focus of the Faculty PhD Student Council is on the social networking of all enrolled PhD students. The council, consisting of seven elected members, not only serves as a point of contact but is also part of the advocacy for PhD students at Osnabrück University, alongside promos.
As part of this social networking initiative, the Faculty PhD Student Council organizes regular get-togethers on behalf of the PhD Student Representative Committee (dates can be found under Events) as well as various other events where PhD students can exchange ideas and network across the various schools at the university.
