Despite decades of efforts to promote women and equal opportunities in science, the leaky pipeline has still not been plugged and the glass ceiling has not been broken. We are still a long way from gender equality and the compatibility of work and family life. Parents and mothers in particular bear the brunt of the additional care work – with direct consequences for their scientific careers. The pandemic has exacerbated this structural exclusion from science, especially for caregivers who are read as female as well as mothers, and has increased the incompatibility.
What solutions and support are available in this situation? And what options do universities have to counteract the dropout of parents and mothers?
Dr. Lena Eckert from the Motherhood and Science Network explores these questions in an online lecture and, in addition to analyzing the status quo of so-called compatibility, presents examples of good practice.
