To the west of Osnabrück is the county of Bentheim, where the guided day hike organized by the university sports team starts. The journey to the starting point of the hike is by train from Osnabrück main station. The route leads through the idyllic Bentheim Forest to the textile town of Schüttorf. Past the Schüttorfer Riesen, the 81m high tower of the Protestant church, the trail leads via the Mühlenkolk with an old water mill to the Vechte meadows. Passing the Schulze-Holmer estate from the 16th/17th century, the route leads into the Bentheim "mountains". Up here you have a beautiful view of Bentheim Castle. The route then leads through the castle park back to the station.
The route of the circular walk is approx. 18 km with an elevation gain of around 50 meters. The walking time without breaks is around four to five hours.
