Beschreibung

Language learning seeks to provide learners with practical knowledge, so that they are fit to act alongside proficient users of the target language. Yet, such encounters between learners and first language speakers are difficult to organise in most formalised learning environments, such as the foreign languag classroom. The Language Café (Balçıkanlı, 2019), however, is such an informal social learning space, where language learners meet to work on their language skills in a non-threatening, self-directed and collaborative manner.

The aim of this course is to plan and put into practice a Language Café in the Studierendenzentrum (student acitvity centre) at Osnabrück University throughout the Winter Term 2023/2024. This course specifically addresses international students at UOS who are interested in passing on their first languages to other (local) students and who would like to

- gain initial experience in foreign language learning & teaching
- plan, manage and market their very own language course in a Higher Education setting
- design effective teaching materials
- find out how learners learn best and how to provide inidividual learning support
- meet and support local students
- engage in intercultural exchange
- earn credit points for your work

No prior experience in theories of language education or in language tutoring is required, as you will learn about the fundamentals of SLA, aspects of informal and autonomous learning, materials design and the concept of the Language Café throughout the first four weeks of the course.

Your responsibilities will include:

- preparing, marketing and moderating weekly sessions for the Language Café
- designing teaching and marketing materials, e.g. posters, flyers and social media posts.
- keeping track of participants' learning needs and progress
- collecting feedback
- keeping track of and documenting your own progress, experiences, observations, etc.

We offer:
- lesson observation & supervision (if desired)
- 3 credit points
- an introduction to the concepts of autonomous learning and the language café
- support in "advertising" your language café.
- administrative support
- support in finding materials; advice on didactic issues
- basic documentation (e.g. template for self-reflection)

Students who have successfully participated in Module A during the winter semester are eligible to participate in Module B during the following summer semester.
