This lecture course is intended to provide of survey of the literature and culture of Britain and Ireland during the past decades, a period characterized by a variety of cultural tendencies and literary forms. Particular emphasis will be laid on the textual analysis of exemplary extracts. Topics to be discussed will include new concepts of history, postmodernism, multiculturalism, gender roles, fantasy and the challenges of urban life.
Participants are invited to read the following texts: Graham Swift, Waterland; Julian Barnes, Flaubert’s Parrot; A. S. Byatt, Possession; Ian McEwan, Black Dogs; Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall; Sally Rooney, Normal People; Jay Kristoff, Nevernight.
