Learn at Lunch.......something about animals and law!

If you are interested to learn about mice and men, pigs in skyscrapers and a dog in space, a spying whale and marauding hippos, suing seals and sued caterpillars, monkey selfies and a famous elephant in the (court)room, then join us for four sessions about animals and law!

This course is designed to examine from a comparative perspective the way in which the law regulates the treatment of animals and to explore the intersection of law, ethics, and animal welfare, offering students a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the rapidly evolving field of animal law.

Course Description:
The interdisciplinary course Animal Law examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding animals, animal protection, and conservation recognizing the growing importance of animal welfare. Through a comprehensive study of relevant legislation, case studies, and theoretical frameworks, students will gain a profound understanding of the legal status of animals, the relationship between humans and animals, and the current challenges faced in animal welfare.

Legislation and Regulation: Laws regulating and protecting animals at national and international level with special regard to animals in agriculture and food systems and animals in research and testing
Wildlife protection and conservation laws
International perspectives on animal law
Animal Welfare vs. Animal Rights - Litigating Animal Rights Cases: Strategies and challenges in courtroom advocacy

Course Objectives:
Analyse and interpret legal statutes and cases related to animal law.
Evaluate the ethical implications of human-animal relationships.
Understand the complexities of animal welfare within various contexts.

Instructional Methodology:
Teaching methods will include lectures, group discussions, case analyses, and real-world examples. Students are encouraged to participate in group discussions.
