3,500 first-semester students start the winter semester

Welcome to Osnabrück University!

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, around 3,500 young people embarked on a new phase of their lives with excitement, anticipation and perhaps a little trepidation: they will begin their studies at Osnabrück University in the winter semester 2025/26.

In the OsnabrückHalle, they were given a ceremonial welcome by University President Prof. Dr. Susanne Menzel-Riedl and Prof. Dr. Jochen Oltmer, Vice President for Studies and Teaching.

"Starting a degree course means curiosity, courage and a desire for change," emphasized University President Prof. Dr. Susanne Menzel-Riedl in her speech. "Osnabrück University is a place where you learn to think critically, take responsibility and shape the future together. We are delighted that you are taking this path with us and wish you every success, openness and the joy of discovery for the coming semesters."

Vice President Prof. Dr. Jochen Oltmer also warmly welcomed the new students: "The start of your studies is a special moment - it marks the beginning of a time that will be formative and enriching. As a university, we see ourselves as partners on this journey. Take advantage of the many offers that will make your start easier and get actively involved in campus life."

Mayor Eva-Maria Westermann attended the welcome event on behalf of the City of Osnabrück. In her welcoming address, she emphasized the close connection between the university and the city: the university is a central pillar for Osnabrück University. "Without the university, Osnabrück University would not be what it is today," said the mayor.

In addition to university institutions, the Osnabrück Student Services, the Student Government and other student initiatives, companies and cultural institutions from the region also introduced themselves to the new students; in total, more than 80 exhibitors were represented in the OsnabrückHalle.

Osnabrück University is also offering the OSKA+ program this winter semester: OSKA, which stands for Osnabrücker Kommiliton*innen für Studienanfänger*innen. Experienced students are therefore on hand to help with all kinds of orientation questions. The hip-hop show dance group offered an insight into university sport, while the Uni Big Band provided musical accompaniment for the event.

As in previous years, the psychology study programs at Osnabrück University were particularly popular this year: around 1,700 applications were received for the Bachelor's degree program in Psychology, and around 1,300 students applied for the Master's degree program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy.

There was a pleasingly high number of enrolments this year for the State Examination in Law: Around 360 first-semester students are starting their studies there. The Master's in European Technology Law, which will be offered at Osnabrück University from this winter semester and offers a combination of law and technology studies, has also got off to a successful start with the first enrolments.
