Manfred Horstmann House of international encounters
The historical protected building is not only just a few minutes away from the city center but also very close to Osnabrueck's most beautiful recreational areas.
In addition to the apartments for rent, a meeting room and two smaller lounge rooms are located on the ground/first floor. These rooms are conducive to promoting international exchange and are suitable for holding various events (meetings, conferences, receptions and private events).
The guest house is a member of IBZ Deutschland, a network of international meeting centres and academic guest houses in Germany.
Architecture and history
The international meeting center is located in a villa built in 1911 by the architect Gustav Majewski with Art Nouveau elements. In 1995/96 the house was renovated by Osnabrück Student Services for use by the University and opened as a Guest House in June 1996. The purchase, renovation and conversion were made possible by state and federal government funding, as well as by generous donations from the City of Osnabrück, local companies and members of the University.
The Senate of the University decided to name the Guest House after the University’s founding rector and long-time President, Professor Dr. Manfred Horstmann.

Apartments
The house has 600 square meters of space and ten apartments of various sizes are spread over four floors. Many guests like to spend time in the garden and the kids are happy about a wooden play house, a small slide and a swing.

All apartments are equipped with toilet and shower, cooking facilities, internet access, telephone and TV. Cutlery, bed linen and towels are provided by the Guest House. The apartments are cleaned weekly by our cleaning staff. The laundry room in the basement is equipped with a washing machine, a dryer and laundry racks for shared use.
Three- and four-bed apartments can also be occupied by fewer persons, you will find details under the section 'rental rates'.
We kindly ask you to note that the whole guest house is a non-smoking area.

Rental rates are including VAT and for a stay more than 4 weeks including weekly cleaning.
The final cleaning is to be paid at the end of the rental period. In case more intensive cleaning is necessary, we reserve the right to charge the additional costs.
Children below the age of 3 stay free. Children are considered as adult on/after their 12th birthday and pay the full rental price. Children between 3 and under 12 years pay EUR 12,75 per week, in all apartments.
We grant a discount of 15% in case of underoccupation - rebate already displayed in the overview. The number of adults in the room is relevant for the application of the discount. Guests of the tenants pay EUR 20.00 per night/person, for longer-term stays from 1 month onwards the regular rate per night may be adjusted.
No advance payment or credit card guarantee required, payment monthly after arrival in cash, by bank transfer or EC/credit card.
Rental conditions
The minimum stay is one week and the maximum is one year. Extensions of tenancy agreements are only possible in exceptional cases.
Each month, a rental invoice will be issued and payment has to be made to Studentenwerk Osnabrück. Payment is possible by credit card, by bank transfer or in cash. Due date of the payment:
- when renting the apartment for up to one month, it is due immediately after moving in
- when renting the apartment for more than a month, it is due monthly in advance upon receipt of the rental invoice
Guests of the tenants pay EUR 20.00 per night/person, for longer-term stays from 1 month onwards the regular rate per night may be adjusted.
The reservation can be cancelled free of charge up to 30 days before the announced arrival. Thereafter a cancellation fee of 50% of the rent will be charged. In case of delayed arrivals or earlier departures the complete period has to be paid.
General information
The guest house is a non-smoing area.
Arrivals, departures and handover of the keys should preferably take place during office hours (Tue and Fr from 9 am to noon / Thu from 2 pm to 4 pm). Different arrangements can be made with the guest house management (phone +49 541 609090, e-mail: gaestehaus@uni-osnabrueck.de).
On the day of arrival, the apartment is available from 12 pm (noon), Mondays from 3 pm onwards.
On the day of departure, guests are requested to check out by 11 am.
Please report any damages or missing items immediately. The guest is liable for any damages caused by him/herself or any member of the apartment. The University is not liable for any injury or damage to people or objects in the house or on its grounds.
In case of conflict, accommodations will be provided according to the following list:
Priority 1: international guest professors
Priority 2: international PhD students
Priority 3: other international guests
Priority 4: German guests
Renting the event rooms
The house offers a meeting room that can be used for holding seminars, conferences or presentations for up to 30 people. It is connected with the conservatory and the clubroom. These rooms are also available for non-university purposes and private events. The use of the fully equipped kitchen including cutlery is included.
The three rooms are conntected and will be rented together. In consideration of the house guests, any event may not last longer than 10 p.m. Exceptions can be made by prior arrangement.
Rental rates per day:
- Osnabrueck University / Student Services: 90 Euro
- House residents: 60 Euro
- Other guests: 120 Euro
- minimum rental period: half a day, the rate will be adjusted accordingly
