Admission requirements

The prerequisite for access to the "Master's degree program in Psychology: Focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy" is that the applicant

a) has obtained a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree in the degree program "Psychology" at a German university or at a university belonging to one of the Bologna signatory states, which meets the requirements of the licensing regulations for psychotherapists (PsychThApprO published in the Federal Law Gazette Volume 2020 Part I No. 11 on 12.03.2020).

b) or has obtained an equivalent degree at another German or foreign university in a suitable previous degree program; the equivalence of foreign degrees is determined in accordance with the assessment proposals of the Central Office for Foreign Education at the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, the degree program is professionally suitable if it meets the requirements of the PsychThApprO in the version valid at the time of application.

By way of derogation, applicants who do not yet have a degree at the time of application are also provisionally eligible for admission if they have at least 150 ECTS credit points and, based on the course of study to date, in particular the examination results to date, it can be expected that they will obtain the degree by the end of the first semester of the Master's degree program at the latest. This means that all credits for the Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree must be completed by the end of the first semester of the Master's degree course. For applications for the winter semester, this is 31 March. The certificate for the Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree must be submitted by 15 April at the latest. If the certificate is not submitted by this deadline and the person provisionally entitled to admission is responsible for this, they are exmatriculated upon expiry of the deadline (§ 19 para. 6 sentence 3 no. 2 NHG).

Applicants who neither have a German university entrance qualification nor have obtained their Bachelor's degree at a German university must also have sufficient knowledge of the German language. German language skills are proven, if this language is not the applicant's native language, by the certificate of the German language examination for university admission DSH 2 or comparable proof of qualification.

In cases of doubt, the lecturer appointed by the selection committee will decide on the applicant's language proficiency.

  • Fundamentals of Psychology for Psychotherapists (25 ECTS credits); the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - General psychology, taking into account cognitive processes in the areas of language, learning, memory, emotion and motivation

    - Differential psychology and personality psychology

    - Developmental psychology

    - Social psychology

    - Biological psychology

    - Cognitive-affective neuroscience

  • Fundamentals of education for psychotherapists (4 ECTS); the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - education and upbringing,

    - significance of social and cultural factors for educational and upbringing processes,

    - educational interventions and intervention settings,

    - legal and family and socio-political regulations with an impact on educational and psychological interventions

    .
  • Fundamentals of medicine for psychotherapists (4 ECTS credits); the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - anatomy,

    - structure and function of the nervous system,

    - selected clinical pictures, in particular internal, neurological, orthopaedic and paediatric clinical pictures,

    - biological components of mental disorders and symptoms,

    - genetics and behavioral genetics,

    - basics of somatic differential diagnostics.

  • Fundamentals of pharmacology for psychotherapists (2 ECTS); the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - pharmacodynamics,

    - pharmacokinetics,

    - psychotropic drugs,

    - pharmacotherapy

  • Disorder theory to the extent of 8 ECTS; the following areas of knowledge must be covered: -

    general and special pathology of mental and psychologically co-related disorders in childhood, adolescence and adulthood including infancy, early childhood and older age

    - epidemiology and comorbidity

    - clinical-psychological diagnostics and classification

    -Models of the development, maintenance and course of mental and psychologically related disorders in childhood, adolescence and adulthood, including infancy, early childhood and adulthood, taking into account the different disorder models of scientifically tested and recognized psychotherapeutic procedures and methods.

  • Psychological diagnostics to the extent of 12 ECTS; the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - general diagnostic procedures and methods

    - diagnostic procedures and methods for behavioral observation including procedures and methods for patient observation

    - indications and diagnostic processes in people of all ages and patient groups

    - characteristics of classification systems including their sources of error

    - psychometric principles of measurement as a prerequisite for test theories and test constructions

    - psychological and psychopathological assessment taking into account differential diagnostic findings

    - language and interaction in the diagnostic process as well as interviewing methods.

  • General procedural theory of psychotherapy to the extent of 8 ECTS; the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - scientifically tested and recognized psychotherapeutic procedures and methods

    - recognized characteristics for the evaluation of scientific evidence of scientifically tested and recognized psychotherapeutic procedures and methods as well as evidence-based new developments

  • Preventive and rehabilitative concepts of psychotherapeutic action to the extent of 2 ECTS; the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - characteristics and function of prevention and rehabilitation, taking into account the needs of different age and patient groups,

    - prevention programs and rehabilitation approaches, taking into account the needs of different age and patient groups

    .

  • Scientific methodology to the extent of 15 ECTS; the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - History of psychology and psychotherapy

    - Methods and scientific concepts for researching human behavior and experience, including epidemiological research

    - descriptive and inferential statistics as well as statistical methods of evaluation research

    - Planning and conducting scientific studies

    - data collection and data analysis using digital technologies.

  • Professional ethics and professional law to the extent of 2 ECTS; the following areas of knowledge must be covered:

    - ethics in research and practice,

    - professional law requirements of psychotherapeutic action,

    - social law requirements of psychotherapeutic care.

  • Orientation internship of 5 ECTS; the following criteria must be met: interdisciplinary health care facility or other facility in which counseling, prevention or rehabilitation is carried out to maintain, promote and restore mental health.
  • Professional qualification activity I worth 8 ECTS credits; the following criteria must be met: psychotherapeutic, psychiatric, psychosomatic or neuropsychological care facility, prevention or rehabilitation facility, facility for people with disabilities or other areas of institutional care in which psychotherapists, psychological psychotherapists or child and adolescent psychotherapists work
