Beschreibung

How did the current global financial system as we know it emerge? Which transformations have been taking place since the post- WWII period? Which actors and institutions have played a role in the liberalization and internationalization of financial systems? In the course of this introductory BA seminar, we will focus on these and more questions to gain a fundemantal understanding of the politics of global finace. The seminar is divided into three blocks: In the first block, we will study the origins of the international monetary system from Bretton Woods until the 2007-08 global financial crisis. Major events in the timeline of globalization of finance such as the gold-dollar exchange standard, the break-up of the Bretton Woods system, the emergence of global foreign exchange trading, 1974 banking crisis, international debt crisis of 1982, the stock market crash of 1987, and the 2007-08 global financial crisis will be discussed in this block. The second block delves into the International Financial Institutions (IFIs) of the post-war era and the infrastructures of global finance. Plus, we will examine the international sovereign debt regime and the hegemony of the dollar within. The last block weighs in on several key issues within the politics of global finance: specifically, how gender, climate change and ecological crises, and democracy is linked with practices within global financial governance.

The seminar will take place in English. More information on the seminar requirements will be discussed during the first class (see the Detailed Outline).
