This lecture course is intended to provide of survey of the literature and culture of Britain and Ireland during the past decades, a period characterized by a variety of cultural tendencies and literary forms. Particular emphasis will be laid on the textual analysis of exemplary extracts. Topics to be discussed will include contemporary psychology, intellectual satire, fantasy, ethnology, postmodernism, multiculturalism.
Participants are invited to read the following texts: Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber; Graham Swift, Waterland; Julian Barnes, Flaubert’s Parrot; Bruce Chatwin, The Songlines; A. S. Byatt, Possession; Ian McEwan, Black Dogs; Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall.
