Beschreibung

Ever noticed that many of our daily utterances are syntactically incomplete? Strange, isn't it?
They lack nouns or verbs or entire clauses. Sometimes they only consist of one word. Crazy!
And yet you are able to make sense of (most of) these utterances and we normally know exactly which words are "missing" . This phenomenon has traditionally been labelled "ellipsis". And then there are meaningful single word utterances which often do not work according to the "rules" of ellipsis and linguists are still baffled by how they work at all. These utterances are often referred to as "fragments".
In this course we will look at "fragments" and "ellipsis" from different perspectives and see what different linguistic theories have to say about them.
