Beschreibung

Before we get to the serious part, let’s think about the following question: Is breakfast cereal a soup? At first glance, this may seem trivial – but why isn’t breakfast cereal a soup? Or is it? This problem exemplifies a basic cognitive process called categorization, during which our knowledge is classified and grouped into categories. Cognitive Linguistics assumes cognitive processes like categorization, which govern the cognitive organization of knowledge, to also apply to language. In this seminar, we will explore how subjectiveness and bodily experience manifest themselves in language, how metaphors work, how knowledge is acquired and stored in the mind, and how we can explain grammar from a cognitive perspective.
