Beschreibung

The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most fiercely contested borders in the world. Over the course of the last decade, more than 2.5 million people have taken to the sea and entered the European Union without authorisation. Often portrayed as an invasion of threatening ‘others’ and naturalised as migratory ‘waves’ or ‘floods’, sea migration continues to dominate newspaper headlines and societal debates on migration in Germany, Europe and beyond. In this course, we will explore the conflictual ways in which the Mediterranean border is both governed and continuously subverted. We will discuss, among others, the emergence and development of maritime migration routes over the past four decades and across regions, evolving migration policies and (externalised) practices of border enforcement, as well as the supra-state, state, and sub-state actors that engage - often antagonistically - along maritime borders. We will explore maritime laws, human rights violations and death at sea, humanitarian and activist interventions to prevent loss of life, as well as the racialised imaginaries that often accompany societal debates on sea migration. This is a theoretically-informed course that will take an interdisciplinary perspective and engages with scholarly work situated in a variety of scholarly fields, including in Migration and Border (Regime) Studies, (International Political) Sociology, Political Geography, as well as Legal, Postcolonial, and Security Studies.
