Don’t Want Your Millions: Protest Songs in American History (Dr. Clark D. "Bucky" Halker)
Untertitel:
Modul ANG-F3, -F5, -FM, X-LKE-6
DozentIn:
Prof. Dr. phil. Peter Schneck
Veranstaltungstyp:
Seminar (Offizielle Lehrveranstaltungen)
Beschreibung:
This is a special master course, taught by international faculty, invited and coordinated by the Institute for English and American Studies at Osnabrueck University and the University of Oldenburg.

Songs of protest have ignited, inspired, and informed protesters for over two hundred years, beginning with the American Revolution in 1776. Coal miners, iron molders, peace activists, female textile operatives, blues musicians, anti-slavery advocates, anarchists, union organizers, Dust Bowl migrants, and the bluegrass and country scene have all counted skilled balladeers and songsters in their ranks.
In this course, we will review the vibrant and diverse protest-song tradition and the songwriters who have used music as a tool for social change in America. We’ll read about and hear the songs of rebel voices such as Joe Hill, Woody Guthrie, Florence Reece, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Big Bill Broonzy, Bruce Springsteen, and other songwriters, long forgotten and rarely heard today. Find out about an important American tradition—using music to educate, challenge, and motivate Americans and their leaders to create a more just and peaceful world for workers, women, African Americans, and people everywhere on the planet!

This course is offered and taught in collaboration with the American Studies program at the University of Oldenburg. It consists of six seminar sessions and two concert sessions. Students at both universities are required to attend all sessions at the other university. In order to acquire credits for the class, you need to attend all sessions and one of the concerts and write a final paper (15-20 pages).

Please note: This course is open to master students from the programs "English and American Studies" and "Literatur und Kultur in Europa" only. The number of participants is limited to 10 students from each university. If you have any question, please contact the course coordinators at UOS and UOL, respectively.
