In many disciplines, students frequently need to speak in class - be it in form of contributions to a classroom discussion or be it in form of a more formal presentation. And, in some fields such speaking is increasingly expected in English. Yet, speaking in front of a course lecturer and a group of other students can be challenging and, if required in English, even scary.
This course is, therefore, designed to help you overcome any potential anxieties and speak confidently and successfully in class (and in public, for that matter). Mixing group work, individual practice, peer feedback, and expert input, we will deal with both general aspects of spoken interaction and the more specific requirements of an academic presentation. In particular, we will focus on the following topics:
- overcoming nervousness when speaking in public;
- speaking clearly and understandably;
- contributing successfully to discussions and debates;
- arguing and supporting your point of view;
- answering questions and addressing criticism with confidence;
- understanding the criteria for good presentations;
- beginning and ending your presentation effectively and confidently;
- developing a logical and transparent structure for your presentation;
- using powerful and attractive language that keeps your audience interested;
- integrating media such as PowerPoint-slides adequately into your presentation;
- handling gestures and other aspects of body language effectively;
- dealing with vocabulary or grammar issues when speaking freely in English. |

| Voraussetzungen: |
| Die Teilnahme an den Fachsprachkursen setzt einen bestandenen Eingangstest / einen Leistungsnachweis eines Vertiefungskurses II (B2.2) der Universität Osnabrück oder einen entsprechenden Nachweis eines anderen universitären Sprachenzentrums voraus. Studierende auf Sprachniveau C1 oder C2 sind ebenso willkommen. |

| Durch mindestens 80% Anwesenheit während der Präsenzphasen sowie die selbstständige Bearbeitung bestimmer von der Lehrkraft festgelegter Aufgaben im Laufe des Semesters wird eine Teilnahmebescheinigung erworben.
