Prerequisites: None

Our perception and our beliefs about the world are considerably influenced by the many hours we engage in some form of media usage. In this course we will take a cognitive psychology perspective on how media influence cognition. We will focus on media coverage of news. In contrast to other media formats that primarily aim at entertainment, most people view news as a source of information about the world. News reports – whether written as a multi-page newspaper article or tweeted in a few words – shape our view about people, countries, and events. If news coverage is too narrowly focused on specific aspects of an event, media consumers are unlikely to build an accurate mental representation of the event. The objectives of this interdisciplinary course are (1) to investigate the cognitive mechanisms that underlie learning from mass communication systems, and (2) to develop strategies and tools helping to overcome different forms of biases.
