Prerequisites: Introduction to Computational Linguistics

This class will provide an introduction to current research in natural language grammars primarily through Head-Driven Phrase-Structure Grammar (HPSG), a well-developed, precisely formulated, and psycholinguistically plausible framework for syntactic and lexical analysis. The course will cover the formalisation of fundamental concepts in linguistic analysis, e.g., lexical entries definitions, parts of speech, constituency, and the syntax-semantics interface. It will then be shown how a grammar can be designed that provides internally-consistent analyses of various key problems and phenomena in various natural languages such as raising, control, passives and long-distance dependencies. The theoretical, psychological, and philosophical implications of such an empirically-oriented grammar design will be also be drawn at each step.
