Content:
The course is concerned with the mechanisms and manifestations of social cognition in humans over the life span. Special emphasis is placed on the evolutionary, cultural, and neurophysiological bases of prosocial behavior, cooperation, theory of mind, empathy, and altruism. Various paradigms, (empirical) methodologies and tasks used to study social cognition in humans and animals will be covered, among them observation, behavioral and neuroscientific experiments.
Course conduct:
The lecturer will introduce social cognition and major topics, highlighting theories, methods, empirical findings, and related controversies. Students will deepen these topics through (group and individual) presentations and lively discussions in class throughout the term. Reading assignments will be given each week via stud-ip. Additional homework assignments will be announced at the beginning of the term.
Prerequisites:
“Foundations of Cognitive Science” and/or “Introduction to Cognitive (Neuro-)Psychology”.
