Beschreibung

[By is eaten monkey banana that the being] -- Why is this string of words not considered a "proper" English sentence while [The banana is being eaten by that monkey] is even though both contain the same words? Obviously, some words necessarily "belong together" in a sentence. The word [the], for instance, cannot stand on its own, but needs a noun like [banana] following it. Syntax deals with exactly this phenomenon of possible and necessary word combinations. In our class we will explore the syntactic rules of English.
