Professional Writing and Discussions courses are advanced language courses designed for B.A. students who are in or have completed their 5th semester of studies and for M.A. students. . Under the guidance of their course instructors, the course participants will undertake a more active and independent development of their language skills by applying them to a specific topic area. They will continue to train their productive and receptive language skills, further expand their lexico-grammatical knowledge in connection with the specialist language used in the course, and acquire supplementary cultural knowledge on English-speaking countries. Ultimately, the central aim of these courses, whatever topic area and skills focus you choose, is to facilitate students' transition into self-sufficient and proficient users of the English language. If you elect to take this course, you will be expected to attend class regularly and contribute actively and intelligently. Furthermore, you will need to complete a portfolio of written and/or oral tasks during the course of the semester.
This particular course will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the main pronunciation features in a number of varieties of spoken English, as well as providing you with the opportunity to train your own pronunciation skills. After taking this class, you will be able to identify prominent features of various English-speaking accents. In terms of improving your own pronunciation, we will look not only at sounds, but also at intonation, syllable stress and rhythm. Furthermore, we will look at ways to avoid typical pronunciation errors. In order to reach a higher level of authenticity, we will discuss and practice strategies such as linking. Our classes will take place in the language lab, which will enable you to record and analyse your speech samples (and those of your fellow students), and to get regular, direct feedback on them. This course requires regular and active participation and students will be expected to lead part of a class session, write a short analytical paper and keep a portfolio of their progress in pronunciation throughout the course. |
